Episode 117 - The Gibson L-5S

Gibson has certainly been making guitars for a long time. One of their earliest, fanciest, and most beloved hollowbody archtop models has been the L-5. Designed by Lloyd Loar and introduced in 1922, it has not left production since. Big shoes to fill…

Until 1972, that is, when Gibson thought they’d take a whack at producing a solidbody version. Every bit as fancy as its hollow grandpa, this guitar does play quite well. It’s just that people weren’t particularly into it, and it was cancelled by 1985.

Beverages!

Podcasting is thirsty work; it’s crucial that everyone involved stay hydrated. The following fine beverage contributed to the success of this episode: Ed has discovered many fine beverages during his stay in Palm Springs. This week he has come prepared with a Lorina Artisinal Sparkling Blood Orange drink. John is keeping up with the swell Orca beverages we've received from Orca. This week it is an Earp's Original Sarsparilla. Mmmm, bitey... This week’s beverage intro song clip, performed live in-studio (mostly) is It Never Rains in Southern California by Albert Hammond.
